Its our 84th Christmas, a time for us to both celebrate and reflect on where we’ve come from, and what we’ve achieved! We’ve turned the clock back 84 years to reminisce on our rich history.
OUR FIRST CHRISTMAS
Its 1934 and a young man called William Herbert Simpson has his first Christmas at Simpsons Beverages. At 24 years old, his dream was to become a successful and respected soft drinks manufacturer. A working-class man and like so many from this generation he experienced tough times. Everything that could be repaired or re-used would be. William Herbert would make and deliver his fine beverages in his hand painted delivery truck and was famously known as the local Pop Man!
As the business grew, William acquired more trucks and employed from the Blackpool area. Winter was also long and hard in the early days of the business. The classic Austin trucks were open sided and the handmade stone jars with sarsaparilla, hop bitters and ginger beer would sometimes explode in the cold temperatures. Often more jars were burst than sold! The vans would sometime return back to the yard with bright red, pink and yellow icicles hanging from the van. When things got really cold, they would warm the vehicles up by lighting a large brazier in the yard to thaw out the fuel tanks!
OUR OLD RECIPES
We’ve been thumbing through our old hand-written recipe books from the 1930’s and have stumbled upon some classic vintage drinks. In years gone by we would make Christmas wine, tomato juice and grapefruit juice which were supplied in small glass bottles. William Herbert was always passionate about taste and quality. This was recognised in the 1960’s when we won awards in the London soft drinks competition for our legendary ginger beer, bitter lemon and orange juice recipes.
WHAT’S CHANGED IN 84 YEARS?
The soft drinks market has evolved immensely in the last 84 years. Christmas in those days meant supplying just the local neighbouring towns and villages, compared to today where we’re proud to supply our drinks worldwide! We used to manufacture and deliver only classic soft drinks like lemonade, sarsaparilla and ginger beer. We also printed some beautiful Simpsons branded drinking glasses to give out as Christmas gifts, some of which are now hidden away with our old recipe books for safe keeping. Today our product range has evolved into thousands of products and different flavours including some imaginative combinations using Christmas flavours like spices, cloves, clementines and black cherries, adding seasonal flair to hundreds of drinks menus.
MEMORIES ARE MADE
Christmas can be a truly special time where many new memories are made and, of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without celebratory drinks! We’re honoured to have contributed to many Christmas memories since 1934, supplying our high quality drinks to supermarkets, bars, wholesalers, retailers, distributors, many well-known drinks brands, bottlers, restaurants, clubs and hotels.
Today we are owned and run by William Herbert Simpsons’ grandsons – Jim, Caleb, Jason and Adrian. In our third generation the family business still remains focused on one goal and that’s our superior quality and unsurpassed taste and passion for drinks. Our premises at Chiswick Grove, Blackpool is also home to our new product development facility. We create and manufacture an expanding portfolio of drinks for our growing client base, which are distributed to a worldwide market. Our beverages are widely stocked on supermarket and department store shelves, served in bars, restaurants, clubs, delis, farm shops and hotels and sold worldwide through various wholesalers, retailers and distributors.
